Hi, it’s Gabe from POPSMASH. I have some bad news. We’re shutting down POPSMASH on May 22, a tough decision we made earlier today and it felt like a punch in the gut.
Why we’re shutting down POPSMASH
- The app still isn’t profitable unfortunately, so we’re losing money every month. The app has been bootstrapped/self-funded this whole time between my cofounder and I. We gave it our best shot.
- Some of our team members have full-time jobs (we all started it part time as a side project) and they were laid off, meaning they need to find other work to support their families.
- The economy is rough, meaning the issues above aren’t likely to get better in the near-term, so our personal runway isn’t as long as it used to be.
- On a personal note, I had a death in my household that has my wife and I reassessing our priorities in life. It’s been tough.
What does this mean for you?
Earlier today I delisted the app so no new merchants would install it. The app will remain active until May 22. Here’s what I recommend you do:
- We automatically sync all of the data we collect from your quizzes (opt-in names, emails, quiz responses) to your Shopify store for you, so you should be fine there as long as you haven’t turned off the syncing. But even if your data is synced, I recommend going to your Submissions page and exporting the data, just so you have a backup.
- Remove any POPSMASH quizzes from your site so they don’t break when you uninstall the app, then uninstall the app when you’re ready.
- If you’re looking for an alternative Shopify quiz app, Quiz Kit is one of many solid ones.
What will happen with my data?
After May 22nd we will begin shutting down the app and all data will be deleted. We are not selling or transferring any assets, it’ll all get deleted.
What about billing?
If you are billed between now and when we turn the app off, feel free to reach out for a refund of payments between now and then either by replying to this email, in app or directly to me at gabe @popsmash .com. However, I recommend uninstalling the app once you’ve finished removing your data to simplify things.
